{"id":1087,"date":"2020-11-18T06:17:25","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T06:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/terrascope2024.wpengine.com\/?page_id=1087"},"modified":"2020-12-03T23:14:19","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T23:14:19","slug":"future-cities-proposal-background","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/terrascope2024.mit.edu\/?page_id=1087","title":{"rendered":"Future Cities Proposal: Background"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Growth Model&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The population and land area of Terratopia will be based upon the growth patterns of Las Vegas, Nevada and the surrounding suburbs in Clark County, an area in the US with one of the least amounts of urban sprawl<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.lmu.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1131&amp;context=cate\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> despite large spikes in population\u2014an increase of 77.3% from 1990 to 2000.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/history\/pdf\/vegas_demographics.pdf\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> Another reason Las Vegas was chosen is how it grew generally radially outward (as seen in the figure below), which makes the growth of Terratopia easier to quantify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/Q85-j86SldnHOJr6Dev0HF6ok1Of3d9_cL_DSCN6Thq_BMukP12OB_SPxjeFQbVHYHEbMG7ecrEtScuRc24-aGHCrj3GoDivJFgW40v1G57r7zHBDTZoIjwzC8cpsrWjnSdZkuYq\" alt=\"Nine frames of satellite images which show the rapid expansion of Las Vegas, Nevada from 1972 to 2018. Satellite images showing growth of Las Vegas metro area over time.<a href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/30215\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the fact that this rapid expansion did not come at the expense of urban sprawl, it is therefore an appropriate city to model after for Terratopia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terratopia\u2019s growth in area and population was roughly modeled on the growth of Las Vegas, Nevada and the surrounding suburbs within Clark County starting in 1950.
